Harvested water is collected through those channels. As droplets collect on the surface, they are absorbed into the channels, but the mushroom design prevents the water from flowing back onto the initial collection surface. They cut a series of mushroom-like channels - smaller in diameter than a human hair - into the collection surface so that part of the surface material overhangs each channel. The UTD team addressed this problem by developing a platform with a unique shape. The platform solves a key problem in water harvesting: Collected water droplets form a thermal barrier that prevents further condensation, so they need to be removed from the surface as rapidly as possible to make room for more harvesting. 29 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The team demonstrated the platform in a study published online Aug. Xianming "Simon" Dai, assistant professor of mechanical engineering in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas, is working on technology to make it possible for anyone to have an affordable, portable device that could access water anywhere, anytime conceivably using no external energy.ĭai and his team of researchers recently advanced that technology by developing a novel platform to accelerate the harvesting process. Well worth picking up if you are in the mood for some fun.One solution to water scarcity is harvesting water from air. Great game to pick up in short spurts, as it doesn’t have the depth to keep you invested for too long at a time. Multiplayer, whether local or online is a special kind of quick-paced, slap you in the face fun that balances things out in a very nice manner. MushroomĪt the end of the day, whether you played the first or not, Mushroom Wars 2 is an enjoyable RTS that is accessible to all and a cracking bit of fun to play. It can be a tad frustrating at first as those who just enjoyed the campaign will be looking for those sweet indicators and are left hoping they sent enough troops to take down an enemy base. It’s just each player trying to frantically figure out what each other is doing while trying to find the perfect time to pop that special move. No longer can you see your enemies’ headcount at each base and there are no indicators telling you which base is under attack. It’s not just that things feel faster in the multiplayer, everything must be done quickly. The developer has done a great job balancing everything out in the MP, as no one character has an overpowering special move. It’s all about trying to make quick decisions to keep troops moving from base to base and using well time special powers to your advantage. It’s a mess of colors in the best possible way, as troops from all sides are crossing everywhere across the map to take out various teams’ bases. Whether it’s couch co-op against the computer or a 4 player free-for-all, things can get rather intense when you leave the campaign. Things can get so chaotic during these sessions. This is where things really take it up a notch. Let’s take this onlineĪ single-player campaign isn’t the only option here to play, as the game also features offline and online multiplayer. Added difficulties to each level allow you to beat it multiple times to get more stars. Thankfully most levels are rather short, so you don’t have much time to think about it before you are off to the next. The game tries to add wrinkles to some of the levels, with strategic structures during some levels that must be captured in full to win. Often times I went into a level feeling like I had already played this before, just with a different starting troop amount. Mushroom Wars 2 has a lot of levels to play through which is great, though at times it doesn’t feel like there is enough variety mixed in there. To contradict that though, oftentimes maps start out very slowly as you wait for troops to arrive, only to spend those troops to upgrade your base, and repeat. The morale system really pushes players to move quickly, capturing spots on the map promptly. The special powers from these heroes are such things as increasing defense on a specific establishment or damaging oncoming troops. The more you have, the faster your morale will increase. To use these powers, you need to gain morale from capturing bases. Each hero comes with a unique set of 4 special powers. Adding some depth to the system is the addition of heroes that you can select.

Do you often find yourself drawing vehicle designs on the margins of your papers? Ever wondered what it would be like to be the next Henry Ford or Enzo Ferrari? Now you can with GearCity. My next step in creating the Friz character is to separate the body drawing and the arm drawing on to separate drawing elements that I can composite into a cut-out for animating. I’ll create some color swatches to match the colors in the image so that my edits aren’t too noticeable from the original. The bit mapped image is inside a "vector box" so I can draw and paint on it just like any other vector drawing. Having erased some of the drawing, I now need to use the paint tool and the brush tool to fix up the drawing. I purposely have a yellow background for my drawing view panel so it is easy to see what is drawing and what isn’t. Now I’ll go back to my previous drawing of Friz and using the eraser tool I’ll remove the lines of his arm. Next I’m going to make a copy of this drawing to use to cut out Friz’s arm and I’ll delete the unwanted parts of that copy just leaving the arm cut out.Īnd then using the contour editing tool and adding and adjusting contour points I’ll define the shape of his arm just like I did for the main character drawing. If you are not familiar with contour editing it may take you some practice to learn when and how to use the point control handles and how to adjust the contours. It is a process of dragging and adjusting the outline contours, first roughly, and then zooming in and fine tuning the outline adding more contour points as I go as needed. To add a contour point you hold down the CTRL key while clicking on the outline. I begin by adding additional contour points to the outline which I am going to then drag to define my desired character’s shape. My next step is to begin the clean up of this initial cut out, so I am going to use the contour edit tool to adjust this "vector box" shape. I now can select and delete the rest of this copy of the drawing leaving me with just the Friz character. I pulled a bounding box around the Friz character and then by dragging the bounding box to one side the Friz character is separated from the rest of the cartoon drawing. I start working on the copy of my first cell and begin with the scissor tool. That way I don’t have to worry about destroying other parts of the vectorized drawing that I will want to use later. I started out making a copy of my drawing element’s first cell. There are many ways to approach this so I’m going to show you the way that I used to cut-out the Friz and Panther characters. With the bit mapped graphic imported into our drawing element cell, we can begin the character cut-out process. This “vector manipulation box” is the secret of how we are going to turn a bit mapped graphic into multiple vector animation assets in separate drawing elements.Ĭlick to see an enlarged version of this figure (see the red arrow in the figure below) This will import the cartoon drawing into our drawing element cell in what is described as a “vector manipulation box”. This opens a dialog box where we select the source drawing and set the vectorization type to “ with texture”. With the right mouse button we click to open a context menu to access the " import and vectorize" command. We go to the exposure sheet and start on the first cell of a drawing element. The first step in constructing this animation project is importing the source cartoon to a drawing element using the “ import and vectorize” command. I am unfortunately not able to credit the artist of this cartoon drawing, but it is so full of character and implied action that it just seemed totally appropriate for use in this tutorial. It is a drawing of the great animation director Friz Freleng and one of his most famous stars the Pink Panther. I wanted to keep this tutorial simple, so I chose a cartoon graphic that just screamed out to me to bring it to life in an animation. You can still do this, but there may be an easier way thanks to the “ vectorize with textures” enhancement added in TBS V 4.0.įriz Freleng and the Pink Panther Cartoon Up until now that required doing the cut out and masking in a bit map editing program like Photo Shop and then importing the parts into image elements in TBS for animating. In this tutorial series I am going to begin to show you some of the conceptual ways to use this new feature for doing photo cut out animation.įor a long time TBS users have been wanting to be able to do cut-out animation using source assets that were created as bit mapped graphics. Toon Boom already had excellent support for cut-out animation and this new feature really adds many interesting possibilities. This opens the doorway to many potentially new and creative ways to use TBS, the most significant of which is “ photo cut-out animation”. It is an added vectorization type “ with texture”. One of the new features of Toon Boom Studio V 4.0 is a deceptively innocent change to “ import and vectorize”. They don’t have to be this, that and a third, or being this type of tier player. “And when I see other guys get calls, they don’t have to be no MVP. “I’ve talked to numerous people about it,” Newton said. Other quarterbacks get more calls, he argued, and he wants to have a chat with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about the issue because “enough is enough.” Newton acknowledged that he doesn’t feel safe and that he isn’t having fun because league referees aren’t making the correct calls when he gets hit. Sunday’s conference actually yielded a bit of news, and showed the human side of the NFL’s beleaguered Superman. One can imagine that the NBA’s resident fashion god, Russell Westbrook, would have OK’d the pink suit and sneakers, but maybe he would’ve worn them separately. We can also look past the fact that nothing matched or actually looked fashionable. Never mind that we’re closer to Christmas than we are to Easter Sunday, so the whole kit appeared out of season by a lot. The term “Cam being Cam” has been a thing for a while now, but the superstar quarterback took it to another level during a postgame news conference after Sunday’s game between the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals.Īfter leading his team to a 30-20 victory over the Cardinals, Newton took to the podium wearing a pale pink suit, teal fedora (with feathers, of course), striped bow tie, checkered shirt, Pepto-Bismol-colored rosette brooch and Velcro-banded designer sneakers. One might have a broken carriage wheel tucked into the snow, while another may showcase an axe buried in a tree stump. Up, down, left, right: this gives you more than enough freedom to explore a game world that is, in essence, a maze, each vista distinguished by a particular feature. You can then flick the screen up or down to move between planes when the situation presents itself, heading deeper into the darkness or wriggling back out again when it all grows too oppressive. It's emphatically two-dimensional for all but a few stand-out moments and you control the action by swiping sideways to move along a series of delicately rendered planes, each showing a precise little sliver of woodland. It's a first-person game, but one unlike any other first-person game I've ever encountered. Year Walk takes place in a wintry forest, long after night has fallen. Lost amid Year Walk's frigid brooks and silver-skinned trees, you'll find an earthy tale of rituals, destiny and, inevitably, murder. Suffice to say it's a horror game, despite its prettiness: a horror inquest, really. I won't be spoiling that story, since, a few puzzles aside, most of the considerable strengths of the latest iOS game from Simogo - creators of Beat Sneak Bandit - lie with its narrative and the manner in which it all comes together in your mind. For me, there was also that familiar tension, too: the clean lines and tidy shapes of the textured, storybook design used to support the darker organic mass of the story that it's been employed to tell. There are no artists and no beaches and no coffins in Year Walk, but there is death and there is nature and there are grim spaces for your imagination to trickle into and fester. You know: the smooth, painted surfaces contrasted with the knowledge of what lay rotting inside. The whole effect hinged, I guess, on a kind of clash of exteriors and interiors. Several years ago, I saw an exhibition by a local artist who made coffins for the birds he found washed up on the beach near his home: weird little curved boxes, tidy and cleanly built, yet strangely organic with it. You can then configure the path to that profile using the Profile setting. In this case, run the Remote Desktop client ( mstsc), configure the setting you want, and save the Remote Desktop profile. You may wish to configure Remote Desktop settings that are not supported in the SSH Client's Remote Desktop tab. For example, if the port is 12345, configure this field to 127.0.0.1:12345. If the Remote Desktop server runs on a non-default port, other than 3389, you can configure it in the Computer field by appending it to the IP address, separated with a colon. This is usually a private IP address, not a public one. If the Remote Desktop server is on a different computer than the SSH server, then the Computer setting needs to be configured with the IP address of that computer, reachable from the SSH server. You can configure any of these, but do not configure the Computer setting unless the Remote Desktop server is on a different computer than the SSH server. Any rules you configure will most likely not interfere, but will also not help.Ī selection of commonly used Remote Desktop settings can be configured in the SSH Client, on the Remote Desktop tab. To use single-click Remote Desktop forwarding, no manually configured rules are needed. This is the localhost address, and will work when the Remote Desktop server is on the same computer as the SSH server.ĭon't configure manual port forwarding rules, in either the C2S or S2C direction. Leave that at the default value, 127.0.0.1. If the Remote Desktop server you're trying to access is on the same computer as the SSH server – which it is in most cases – do not try to alter the Computer setting on the Remote Desktop tab in the SSH Client. Sometimes, Remote Desktop forwarding does not work because users expect it to be difficult. You can get there from the Start menu directly, by searching for "remote access". If the server runs an appropriate version of Windows, you can verify that Remote Desktop access is enabled via Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced system settings > Remote tab. No configuration or settings changes are needed. If the server accepts Remote Desktop connections on the default port (3389), Remote Desktop forwarding will simply work as-is. Note: Windows Home editions do not support accepting Remote Desktop connections. Linux servers can support Remote Desktop using the Xrdp server. This is supported in Windows Server editions, and Windows desktop editions including Professional and Enterprise. The only requirement for single-click Remote Desktop forwarding is that the computer on which the SSH server is running accepts Remote Desktop connections. If using Bitvise SSH Server and SSH Client, access to the server can be further obscured using SSH protocol obfuscation: this prevents any type of probing by attackers unless they know the obfuscation keyword. The SSH user can be required to log in using public key authentication if password access is not permitted, attackers will not be able to guess a password. This allows the use of additional defenses. This prevents a man-in-the-middle attack between the SSH Client and the SSH server.Ī server firewall can be configured to disallow direct Remote Desktop access, and only permit it through SSH. When Remote Desktop is port forwarded over SSH, the SSH Client verifies the authenticity of the SSH server using the server's host key. This renders the session vulnerable to a man-in-the-middle attack. Outside of a domain environment, the Windows Remote Desktop client cannot itself verify the authenticity of the server to which it is connecting. The SSH Client will setup all the settings and launch the Windows Remote Desktop client for you.Īccessing Remote Desktop over the SSH Client offers the following advantages: After connecting to an SSH server using Bitvise SSH Client, clicking the New Remote Desktop button launches a port forwarded Remote Desktop session. Summer and winter bonuses became so prevalent that until the mid 2000s, Japan’s mandatory state employee health, pension and unemployment insurance system contribution rates were much less on summer and winter bonuses than on regular monthly salary. With many Japanese joining a large company at 18 after graduating high-school, or at 22 after graduating university, then staying until retirement at 60, seniority-based pay traditionally made sense as part of Japan’s infamous ‘lifetime employment’ culture. Japanese call it ‘seniority-based pay’ because a company automatically increases an employee’s pay annually, and promotes the employee, depending on his or her years of service. Most employees earn a ‘divide-by-18’ annual salary, with 1/18th paid on the 25th of each month and semi-annual summer and winter bonuses, each equal to 3/18ths salary, paid each June and December. Let’s step back for a moment to understand how Japanese companies traditionally pay their employees. Performance-related pay in Japan, where performance-related means personal performance related? Doing business in Japan in the 1980s it would have been impossible, but three decades later, given the changes in Japanese employee attitudes resulting from two decades of recession and deflation, it is now an achievable goal to have every employee in your company’s Japanese office earning on a pay for personal performance basis. Another method would be to play the mp3 file on your computer and use a program such as Virtual Audio Cable to link the audio to FLDIGI.In some cases, you can actually damage your sound card if you feed it audio at a high volume. Note that you should lower the volume of your mp3 player to do this. Better yet, if you have a way to feed the audio directly from your mp3 player into the line-in (or microphone input) on your computer–say, with a shielded audio patch-cord–this will insure a clean signal into FLDIGI. FLDIGI is reasonably forgiving, but you should try this in a low-noise environment. FLDIGI can decode the digital signal from the computer’s buit-in microphone if the mp3 player volume and microphone gain are adequate. Hold the speaker near the computer’s microphone.
